The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park The San Diego Zoo (founded in 1916) and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (founded in 1972) are renowned zoological gardens, each with one of the largest and most comprehensive collections in the world. The Zoo and Safari Park serve as “living laboratories” for the natural sciences with more than 7,500 animals representing more than 1,000 species and subspecies. Both are known for their botanical gardens as well.
