Overview
Ghadiri Laboratory at the Scripps Research, Department of Chemistry, and the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology is currently seeking talented Postdoctoral Fellow candidates with a strong background in biology, molecular biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, and/or bioinformatics.
Ghadiri and coworkers are developing novel methods for the directed remodeling of the gut microbiota in vitro and in vivo to probe the chemical biology of gut microbiome, identify new targets and pathways, and develop novel classes of therapeutics to prevent the onset or progression of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, obesity, and other immunological and inflammatory diseases. It is now well-established that changes in the gut microbiome can provoke phenotypic changes in the host and promote or suppress the development of various chronic diseases. In humans and animals, imbalances in the gut microbiome have been associated with several ailments. We have shown that it is possible to effectively remodel a dysfunctional microbiome using appropriate small molecule bacterial growth modulators to treat or prevent the progression of atherosclerosis in animal models of the disease. We are seeking qualified Postdoctoral Fellows to join our multidisciplinary team of scientist and take part in various aspects of this broad research effort.
The candidate will be involved in several aspects of this project, including i) refinement and implementation of the compound screening and scoring process to identify leads, ii) identification and functional characterizations of disease-associated targets and biological pathways in the host and gut microbiota by using gut microbiota transcriptome analysis, metabolomics, and host gene expression changes, and iii) exploring the effectiveness of identified compounds in several distinct animal models of diseases. Candidates with demonstrated experience in biological research, microbiome studies, and genomics are highly desirable.
