This is a full-time position based at our office in Indianapolis, Indiana with remote work available up to 2 days a week. This position is expected to travel approximately 10% of the time and may include evenings or weekends.

The Indiana Chapter of the Nature Conservancy has a rich history and a strong heritage.  By thinking beyond traditional approaches to conservation, engaging with new partners, embracing local solutions to global challenges, and harnessing the full potential of our talented staff and board, we believe we will build together a future for Indiana we can all be proud of.  The Indiana Stewardship Team is vital to reaching the ambitious goals of the Indiana Chapter and the global strategies of The Nature Conservancy.  The Director of Stewardship guides land management and stewardship within the Indiana Chapter and provides scientific leadership and support for the chapter’s conservation planning work. In coordination with leadership at the chapter and Midwest Division level, they help develop strategic conservation objectives to meet chapter and divisional goals and develop innovative analyses, tools, and frameworks to address natural system needs.  The Director of Stewardship supervises and empowers a diverse team of dedicated professionals across the state implementing land management strategies, field operations, and mitigation projects to achieve ecological objectives.  They also serve as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations, and the academic community to establish the Conservancy as a major conservation partner. They develop key partnerships with public and private organizations and engage local community support for conservation efforts.

Responsibilities & Scope:

·       Supervises a statewide team of professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training, and career development.  Establishes clear directions and sets stretch objectives.

·       Develops and manages complex annual budgets and establishes and maintains optimal performance standards within budget.

·       Responsible for ensuring that public and private funds are raised to meet program needs.

·       Frequently makes independently strategic decision based on analysis, ambiguous information, and context.

·       Negotiates complex agreements, in a political environment.

·       Builds cooperation from outside parties to accomplish program goals.

·       May be responsible for leading or co-leading aspects of a divisional lands and waters strategy.

·       May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

We’re Looking for You:
The Nature Conservancy in Indiana is seeking a Director of Stewardship to join our dynamic leadership team as they develop and implement strategic conservation objectives across the state.  They will guide a diverse team of over twenty dedicated professionals implementing land management strategies on over 35,000 acres at many of the highest-quality conservation sites in Indiana.  They lead by example, demonstrating cutting edge management strategies, ecological restoration, and invasive species management techniques on Conservancy owned lands and become a state and regional conservation and thought leader for the Conservancy and our partners.  The ideal candidate will be a highly organized, skilled communicator with experience leading and motivating a large team.  Join TNC today as we create innovative, on-the-ground solutions to our world’s toughest challenges so that people and nature can thrive together.

What You’ll Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
  • Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives, and managing performance.
  • Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups, and/or government agencies.
  • Experience negotiating.

Bonus:

  • Knowledge of current trends in conservation science and practice, ecological restoration, invasive species control, and ecological dynamics in the Midwest.
  • Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $90,000 – $94,000 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
