Job Title: Director of Development

FLSA Status: Exempt, Full Time

Reports to: Executive Director

Location: Remote

The Native American Food Sovereignty Alliance (NAFSA) is a national network of Indigenous leaders dedicated to restoring food systems that support tribal self-determination and community wellness. NAFSA’s mission is to support Native communities nationally with advocacy, education, and networking as they revitalize their Indigenous food systems. NAFSA brings together proven strategies with innovative thinking as we support ethical economic development by promoting expanded local food production that renews natural resources and enhances traditional cultural activities to mentor a new generation of Native food sovereignty activists, chefs, farmers, and practitioners.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Development position is responsible for overseeing, coordinating, and implementing NAFSA’s fundraising efforts. This position includes oversight of NAFSA’s development team to ensure timely development and submission of grant proposals and reports, grant management, coordination of individual giving activities, and working with the executive director to achieve annual fundraising and strategic planning goals.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

●       Coordinate and lead a supportive and collaborative grants management and individual donor stewardship team to ensure completion of objectives, timely data gathering, and strategize grant spend down.

●       Oversee maintenance of annual grants calendar; keep the grant calendar up to date with all ongoing philanthropy projects, using the calendar to manage and assign tasks and ensure the fundraising team meets all deadlines.

●       Lead collaborative grant writing and reporting process with executive director, fundraising team, and finance staff.

●       Schedule monthly meetings to discuss upcoming grants and organize other meetings, as needed, for grant review, budget development with fiscal staff etc.

●       Support grant proposal writing as needed and provide grant proposal review and feedback.

●       Work with program and finance staff to support the development of evaluation standards and set timelines/processes to collect necessary data for timely grant reporting.

●       Maintain organized and current grant documentation including all data files relevant to grant writing, evaluation, and reporting.

●       Ensure timely submission of all grants and reports via coordination of the development team.

●       Lead development of/ensure adherence to development SOPs and donor equity guidelines.

●       Work alongside NAFSA’s Communications Director to create an annual individual giving plan that nurtures and sustains donor relationships.

●       Oversee development of and adherence of staff to an annual schedule of online and/or mail donation requests and review/ensure/contribute to appropriate messaging.

●       Oversee and maintain the donor database, and ensure that the fundraising team has timely donor communication, including sending tax donation letters.

●       Compile monthly individual giving reports and work with the finance staff to cross-reference monthly donations.

●       Develop and maintain positive working relationships with funders and individual donors.

●       Research and identify new funding prospects and make recommendations.

●       Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and execute annual strategic goals for the development team.

●       Work with the Finance department to develop fundraising reports that highlight grant and individual giving portfolios and support report updates to internal stakeholders.

●       Support in the development of an Annual Report and seasonal mailings.

●       Represent NAFSA in their region by allocating time to articulate our mission at meetings/conferences and gatherings, meet with potential and current funders, conduct listening sessions, and in whatever ways help us fulfill our mission.

●       Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

●       Demonstrated commitment to the principles and priorities of the NAFSA.

●       Well-organized, detail-oriented, and capable of meeting short term deadlines while advancing multiple projects with long term goals.

●       Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills, in English.

●       High level of professionalism and exceptional interpersonal skills.

●       Demonstrated ability to work as a team member as well as the ability to work independently in a team environment.

●       Background and familiarity with agriculture, Indigenous food sovereignty, and rural and diverse land-based tribal communities is strongly preferred.

●       Committed to equity and justice in the Indigenous food sovereignty movement; familiarity with Indigenous agriculture or willingness to learn.

●       Willingness to travel to quarterly staff retreats and occasional program events.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree

Education Preferred: Master’s Degree

Experience: At least five years of experience working in fundraising, including a successful record for grant writing, individual donor campaigns, grant management; at least three years of experience with program management and in a supervisory role; OR a combination of education and experience may be considered as a substitute for degree requirement.

Computer Skills: Knowledge of various technology platforms such as Google Suite, MS Office, Zoom, and database management.

Certificates & Licenses: Driver’s license

REMOTE WORK EMPLOYMENT: Remote Work Team Members complete their job responsibilities from a location other than on-premises.
