CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal part-time overhire, Non-exempt

WORK SCHEDULE: Tuesday – Sunday. Typically, a 6-day performance schedule per production; this will change during off-show periods, load in, and tech periods.

COMPENSATION: $24.50 per hour

 

POSITION SUMMARY

Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 85 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.

Berkeley Rep (LORT B) seeks seasonal stage crew to join our team for the 2024-2025 season. Under the direction of the stage supervisor, the stage crew is responsible for running scenery and properties show tracks competently and responsibly, leading to a successful, safe, and smooth running of technical rehearsals and shows.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the direction of the stage supervisor:

  • Participate as run crew for scenery and properties as assigned. Duties includes moving quickly and quietly to carry, push, lift, and pull scenery or prop objects on and off-stage areas in a dark environment.
  • Attend full run-throughs of rehearsals as scheduled by the stage supervisor to gain a full understanding of production flow.
  • Assist in daily clean up and preparation of stage areas and backstage areas.
  • Participate in the maintenance and repair of scenery and props.
  • Appear onstage in costume when needed.
  • Assist in post-show clean up and the disassembly of stage and backstage areas.
  • Participate in workshops and trainings as required such as: fly system, fall arrest, harassment prevention, bystander intervention, anti-bias, and antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with other departments, most frequently with the scene shop, prop shop, stage management, wardrobe, sound, and electrics teams.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Comfortable working at heights and in cramped spaces.
  • Ability to safely move heavy items.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and execute them accurately.
  • Ability to perform complex technical scene shifts under stress and pressing time deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt to changing schedules, scene shift plans, and locations.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and maintain a positive and productive atmosphere in a group environment.
  • Ability to work all shifts, primarily nights, weekends and daytime technical rehearsals and understudy rehearsals.
  • Ability to move quickly, often while carrying scenery or props.
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Backstage crew experience is desirable.
  • Experience working in a fly house is desirable.
  • Knowledge of tools and hardware is desirable.
