POSITION: Patron Experience Representative
REPORTS TO: Front of House Director
WORK SCHEDULE: 20–30 hours per week, evenings and weekends, with occasional weekdays as scheduled for rentals and special events
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal part-time, non-exempt
COMPENSATION: $22.75 per hour
Position Summary
Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) has grown from a storefront stage to an international leader in innovative theatre. Known for its ambition, relevance, and excellence, as well as its adventurous audience, the nonprofit has provided a welcoming home for emerging and established artists since 1968. Over 6 million people have enjoyed more than 500 shows at Berkeley Rep, including 86 world premieres. Berkeley Rep shows have gone on to win 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 Pulitzer Prize, and many other honors. In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997. Through its annual seven-play season, together with up to four special event presentations, Berkeley Rep invites audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
Berkeley Rep seeks patron experience representatives. Patron experience representatives act as the first point of contact between our patrons and the Theatre. They are tasked with directing patron traffic, answering inquiries, coordinating with other departments, and more. As members of our front of house team, our patron experience representatives respect and value people of every nation, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and culture, providing a radically inclusive and welcoming experience for our communities and audiences. This opportunity is a great fit for candidates with a strong commitment to customer service. Ideal candidates have experience in theatre house management, special events management, catering, bartending, or hotel hospitality services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a house manager, usher, or concessionaire as assigned.
- Support opening and closing night receptions.
- Track and manage lost and found for patrons, artists, and staff.
- Maintain and support Berkeley Rep’s protocols and procedures for optimal audience experience.
- Leading with joy and intention, interface with patrons and artists in a welcoming and professional manner in alignment with Berkeley Rep’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and equity.
- Collaborate with multiple departments, including production, box office, artistic, development, and marketing.
- Execute other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Two years of experience with bar/restaurant POS systems; experience with CAKE a plus.
- Excellent active listening and verbal communication; English fluency is required.
- Ability to lift 10–20 lbs.
- Demonstrated commitment to antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access, and supporting a diverse community of patrons, artists, and staff.
- Ability to balance operating quickly and efficiently with periodic lulls.
- Excellent customer service skills with proven experience in a customer service environment.
- Ability to problem solve, adapt, and respond to changing work situations and environments.
- A friendly and approachable personality.
- Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with your teammates.
