What We Can Achieve Together:
The Mature and Old Growth (MOG) Forest Social Scientist provides technical and scientific support on a large, collaborative research project with the US Forest Service. The successful candidate will be tasked with integrating social science data into threats analyses, monitoring, and management planning for MOG forests. Threats analyses will address wildfire and management risks to MOG and associated ecosystem services including recreation, wildlife habitat, drinking water, and air quality. The forest social scientist will curate and integrate data on humans and their interactions with and values surrounding MOG forests to inform forest management options. The position will lead and/or collaborate on the generation of information for maps and other data products, reports, and peer reviewed publications related to MOG Forests and their management, stewardship, and conservation.
We’re Looking for You:
The Forest Social Scientist will support the United States Forest Service’s Mature and Old Growth (MOG) forest efforts over the next three years. The position will be embedded at a Forest Service office in the United States (location flexible). We are looking for a social scientist with a background in one or more of the following: human dimensions of natural resource management; ecosystem services; policy and planning; environmental justice; decision science; social values mapping. We recognize that any individual candidate may not possess subject matter expertise in all areas; being strong in one area is sufficient for consideration. The social scientist’s work will include quantitative research related to public and stakeholder values, community characteristics ad demographics, ecosystem services (including provisioning and cultural services), and forest management. Analyses will be conducted at the regional to national level, with a focus on the National Forest System.
What You’ll Bring:
· Master’s Degree in a social science related field, such as psychology, sociology, geography, public policy, economics, natural resources or forestry with a human dimensions focus, or demography, and 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Experience working on projects related to ecosystem services and natural resource management.
· Experience working on interdisciplinary, distributed research teams.
· Programming skills (e.g., R) and/or experience with socio-economic/demographic datasets, including cleaning data, summarizing data, and running statistical analyses.
· Experience synthesizing, interpreting, and communicating demographic data and social science research findings.
· Experience preparing reports of findings.
· Record of peer reviewed publications in scientific journals.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Multi-language skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
· PhD preferred.
· Knowledge of spatial analyses applied to social science data.
· Experience working and communicating with a wide range of people and leading work across functional teams, including government agencies.
· Ability to use project management tools, meet deadlines, and attention to detail.
· Experience with human subjects (e.g., surveys, interviews, focus groups) data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, STATA, NVivo) and techniques.

Salary Information:
The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $63,000 – $94,000 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
